Course Description

The New Brunswick Critical Care Nursing Program Preceptorship has been designed for students to practice what they have learned and provides a structured process to evaluate the student’s overall performance in each competency area. Emphasis throughout the preceptorship is to assist the student in achieving the clinical competencies outlined in the Preceptor Manual.

Course Outline

The clinical competencies are based on the Canadian Nurses Association Critical Care (Adult) and Emergency Care Nursing Competencies as well as the standards from the Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses (CACCN), Canadian Council of Cardiovascular Nurses (CCCN) and National Emergency Nurses Association (NENA)

Guidelines

1.     Your Site Coordinator will assign you a preceptor.

2.     The preceptor is responsible for completing the performance assessment at the end of the preceptorship period. Continuous feedback is given to you throughout the preceptorship. At the midpoint an informal discussion should occur as to how the you are progressing.  If there are concerns about your progress the Teaching and Learning Consultant will be notified to discuss progress and remediation options.

3.     To successfully complete the preceptorship, the preceptee must achieve the minimum of MS-1 (Meets-Standards 1) on all outcome standards. The completed preceptor manual must be submitted to the site coordinator within 30 days of start of preceptorship.
