Course Description

This course empowers safety professionals to navigate the ethical and professional challenges they face daily. Through an exploration of the BCRSP Code of Conduct and other relevant ethical standards, you will gain the tools to make sound, principled decisions that protect the well-being of employees and uphold the integrity of their organizations.

You will develop a strong ethical framework to identify and analyze ethical dilemmas, recognize biases, and understand when actions like whistleblowing may be necessary. By the end of this course, you will have the confidence and knowledge to make ethical decisions with professionalism and integrity.

Course Outline

This course includes 4 modules and requires approximately 20 hours of student engagement.

There are 4 quizzes (worth 20% of the final mark) and 1 case study assignment (worth 80% of the final mark). To pass the course, you must achieve a final grade of 70% or higher.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the differences between law and ethics and interpret key ethical theories in decision-making.
  • Identify categories of ethical theories and moral principles relevant to OHS practices.
  • Distinguish between a profession, quasi-profession, and occupation in the context of OHS.
  • Apply the BCRSP Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct to real-world examples.
  • Define and recognize conflicts of interest in professional settings.
  • Identify the specific obligations and limitations of CRSP/CRST roles.
  • Understand the implications of professional liability, errors, and omissions.
  • Describe the disciplinary process and consequences for unacceptable behaviours in the profession.
  • Analyze when disclosure and whistleblowing are appropriate, along with how to act ethically.
  • Evaluate methods for raising ethical concerns and supporting ethical discourse within the field of OHS.
