ENV 3005 - Inland Fishes of NB Identification
Course Description
Whether you are a biologist, aquatic technician, student, angler or just curious about fish in New Brunswick, this course is for you! There are 54 species of inland fish in New Brunswick and during CRI’s one day workshop you will learn key characteristics to tell them apart! This course is ideal for any person conducting electrofishing studies, presence and absence surveys, fish rescues or anglers wanting to properly report their catch.
The Inland Fishes Identification Course is lab based and instructed by the author of ‘Inland Fishes of New Brunswick’, Mark Gautreau. During the lecture portion of the course, Mark will provide instruction on how to use the book effectively and will discuss the various features of fish used for identification. He will walk you through the fish families found in New Brunswick and highlight the identifying characteristics for each species. He will also cover species distributions, range expansions and new introductions. Following the lecture, the participants will complete a hands-on exercise with jarred fish species. A copy of New Brunswick Inland Fishes is required for the course. Bring your own copy or purchase a copy the day of for $30.

Learner Outcomes
• Ability to identify characteristics of New Brunswick’s freshwater fish species.
• Understanding of how to use the ‘Inland Fishes of New Brunswick” book in the field.
• A broad scale understanding of distribution of New Brunswick fishes.
• Hands-on experience identifying fish species (preserved specimens).
