Course Description

This is a self-paced, 3-hour eLearning course providing foundational knowledge in transportation planning for small to medium-sized Canadian communities. The non-accredited course does not require an engineering background, and should be relevant for any public official looking to grow their understanding of transportation planning in support of infrastructure development 
  
Participants will learn about transportation planning best practices, how to understand the current state of their own community’s practices, and how to take this knowledge to help their community plan for future transportation planning needs in their organization. 

Goals
The primary goals of this eLearning course are to: 

  1. Assess Planning Maturity: Enable participants to assess their organization’s current transportation planning maturity and identify areas for improvement. 

  2. Build Planning Capacity: Develop and enhance the municipality’s internal capacity for transportation planning by introducing structured processes and best practices in the areas identified through the maturity assessment. 

  3. Apply Knowledge: Equip staff with the confidence to apply learned planning concepts to real- world transportation systems and to recognize when to engage external experts for support, ensuring they have enough baseline knowledge to work effectively with consultants. 

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Evaluate Planning Maturity: Self-assess their municipality’s transportation planning practice maturity.
  • Identify Key Target Areas: Identify the key areas and practices to focus on in their transportation planning processes.
  • Determine Factors for Success: Determine the factors and criteria that will enable their transportation planning projects to be successful.
  • Plan Next Steps: Identify practical next steps to initiate or improve a transportation planning project or exercise in their municipality while knowing when and how to seek external expert help.
