OHS 5075 - Organizational Leadership (Formerly CCSL 4530)
Course Description
This course is tailored for safety professionals eager to enhance their ability to influence, build consensus, and implement effective change. You will explore topics such as organizational structure and governance, developing a visionary approach, change management, and the practical integration of leadership theory into everyday practice.
Equip yourself with the skills needed to navigate and lead successfully in complex environments and gain a deeper understanding of how organizational structures function.
The completion of this course qualifies IPMA-Canada members to receive ten (10) recertification points.
Course Outline
This course includes 5 modules and requires approximately 52 hours of student engagement.
Learner Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand the role of organizational hierarchy in influencing safety management performance.
- Recognize the importance of major stakeholder groups in affecting safety performance.
- Build trust and engage with the safety management system and overall safety performance by understanding span of control.
- Utilize factors that influence organizational culture and its evolution.
- Analyze aspects of corporate governance to improve safety management and performance.
- Adapt strategic business planning tools like SWOT analysis and the balanced scorecard for safety group strategic planning.
- Develop business cases for safety and safety program enhancement.
- Drive safety performance improvements utilizing change management and understand Kurt Lewin’s change management theory.
- Understand the Pareto Principle and its applications in managing change effectively.
- Identify risks associated with organizational changes, especially in safety management.
- Develop strategies for using collaboration as a foundation to build influence in an organization.
- Examine various leadership styles and determine their appropriateness in different safety management scenarios.
- Identify characteristics of embedded safety advocates and strategies to engage them in transformational safety change.
