OHS 5052 - Fire Prevention and Protection (Formerly COHS 3330)
Course Description
Fires are a major cause of property damage and loss of life. In this course, learners will develop an understanding of the chemistry of fire, the causes of fire, and current methods of fire prevention and protection. The concepts of fire hazard evaluation, control, prevention, reduction, and elimination of fire hazards are reinforced. A major focus in this course is the concept of Life Safety as it relates to fires and the control of damage and loss of life from fires in the workplace.

Learner Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the role of consensus standards in safety practice and define fire, explaining the concepts of the fire triangle and fire tetrahedron, including their significance and differences.
- Demonstrate understanding of hazard isolation, compatibility of hazardous materials, and major components of the fire safety tree.
- Identify building codes relevant to their jurisdiction, explaining their role in ensuring life safety, and articulate basic principles of fire detection.
- Explain the operating features and types of automatic sprinkler systems and summarize the steps in emergency planning.
