HEA 5003 - Management of the Critically Ill Client and their family
Course Description
This course will lay the basic foundation for the management of the Critically Ill Patient with – Renal, Hematological/Immunological, Gastrointestinal, and/or Endocrine Alterations and their families. The learner will as a prerequisite have completed Courses 1, 2, & 3.
Learner Outcomes
The students will:
- Increase their understanding of the challenges associated with alterations in the Renal, Hematological/Immunological, Gastrointestinal, and Endocrine systems within the critical care setting.
- Explore nursing concepts such as assessment, planning, and collaborative practice as they relate to alterations in Hematological/Immunological, Gastrointestinal, and Endocrine systems and renal failure intervention within the critical care setting.
- Demonstrate an understanding of pre-renal, intra-renal and post-renal failure by reviewing the online modules.
- Discuss potential complications patients can experience related to acute renal failure, alterations within Hematological/Immunological, Gastrointestinal, and Endocrine systems, or infectious disease processes.
- Discuss nursing management of patients with acute renal failure, alterations within Hematological/Immunological, Gastrointestinal, and Endocrine systems or infectious diseases.
- Examine basic lab data and findings associated with hematological, immunological, renal, endocrine, gastrointestinal systems and infectious diseases.
- Interpret (within scope of practice) and report laboratory data to the appropriate health care team members.
- Understand nursing responsibility related to laboratory studies that are available and, discuss the implications of lab findings on patient care, and understand how these results will be incorporated into daily patient care plan.

Equipment:
- The learner will require access to a computer and internet connection capable of using Zoom This will also require a headset with a microphone provided to you by UNB.
Delivery Methods may include:
- On-line content/Self Directed Learning SDL (self-study)
- Synchronous classroom “Zoom”/presentations and cases
- Student evaluation presentations (small group assigned)
- Videos assignment (individual)
